Google Changing The Face Of Dating

DATING used to be largely a matter of spenf\ding time with a love interest, discovering the good, the bad and the ugly in person. If you were lucky, friends helped fill in some of the blanks.

These days, the Internet - and the ability to check people out before they ever meet up - has forever changed the rules.

For better or worse, "googling" your date has become standard practice. "I often tell my freinds that are still in the dating sphere to use the power of Google to their advantage," says Katie Laird, a 24-year-old Web marketing professional and self-proclaimed "social software geek" from Houston.

The results can be enlightening, surprising - and sometimes, a little disturbing. So Laird's advice also comes with a warning: "Don't google what you can't handle."

Here is the voice of experience. In her dating life, she regularly did online research on her dates and turned up, among other things, "bizarre" fetishes and a guy who was fascinated with vampires.

"Not my scene at all," Laird says, "and nothing I would've ever guessed over an initial meeting and beer."

She also had to contend with an on-again, off-again boyfriend who googled her on a daily basis to try and track her every move. The story did end happily, however, when she met her future husband online.

In some ways, having a social networking page - or pages - has become the new calling card. It's a way for people to check out photos and find out what they have in common, even when they've already met in person.

That was the case for Brad White, a 23-year-old recent college grad in Chicago, who met his current girlfriend through friends at a bar - and immediately looked her up on Facebook. "The commonality of our music taste and friends is what prompted me to ask her out," White says, "obviously, besides the attraction."

The details people find also can provide a few talking points to get past the initial awkwardness of a first date - though not everyone likes to admit that they've done their research.

"It seems like in contemporary dating, it's this elaborate dance between two people who already know a lot of what their date is talking about, but they can't admit it," says David Silver, an assistant professor of media studies at the University of San Francisco who studies online culture.

"You nod your head with curiosity, but you already know what they're going to say."

Even he is amazed at the level of information that can be dug up these days.

With a little creativity and Internet savvy, a person can find anything from blog postings to new stories that might include personal details - and whether people are telling the truth about their age and where they've lived.

It helps to know some basic details upfront, such as e-mail address that could help turn up an online nickname; some go as far as paying for an online background check.

Often, though, informationis almost too easy to find.

MaryBeth Moore discovered that after she got a call from a guy her mother's hairdresser suggested as a good match. At first, Moore was game. But then she checked out his MySpace page and found photos showing him naked in a bath tub.

"Don't worry - I canceled the date," says Moore, who's 24 and lives in West Palm Beach, Florida.

There's also the problem of mistaken identity.

Lisa Philips, a 31-year-old San Franciscan, was not pleased for instance, when a search of online images turned up photos of a porn star who shares her name. She can laugh about it now.

"But it's definitely NOT the first impression I want to make with my dates," she says. "Very embarrassing."

It's a big reason people should take the information they find online "with a grain of salt," says Dr. Paul Dobransky, a Chicago-based psychiatrist and author of "The Secret Psychology of How We Fall in Love."

He says there's nothing wrong with doing a little online homework - but thinks the focus should remain on face-to-face interaction to make a final judgment.

"Our minds are more made for in-person, slow contact in getting to know one another," Dobransky says.

In the end, Danielle Martinetti says online research really only helps to a point, anyway. "The crazy stuff usually becomes apparent on the actual date," the 30-year-old New Yorker says.

"No amount of online searching is going to tell you that a person has issues with his mother, loves to be described as a George Clooney look-alike, has an overzealous obsession with hand sanitizer, or that he prefers to sit facing the door in a restaurant 'just in case.'"

East Versus West

Gaming companies know there are at least 2 major markets for Massively Multiplayer Online gaming. You've got the Western market dominated by Everquest in past years and World of Warcraft more recently while the Eastern or Pan-Asian market looking more anime-ish with titles like Legend of Mir II and Lineage II.

While shooter games like cCounterstrike and strategy titles like Warcraft 3 have proven popular regardless of language or ethnicity, the realm of MMO's show a sharp divide of tastes and philosophies between the 2 major markets.

Western gamers tend to log in from home and bear the label of gaming geek. Eastern gamers are regular folks who trek to huge gaming cafes for their MMO fix and tend to include the popular kids too. Costs in the Western countries are also higher with a tendency to make payments by credit card. Around here, cheap prepaid is the way to go.

This divide has led to some fairly spectacular failures in MMO launches; sharp lessons to international game publishers looking to establish solid user bases in areas outside their home country.

Invisible Borders
The fantasy MMO Final Fantasy XI would be a good case of point. This game was a big success in Japan but got a lukewarm from reviewers and players in the United States. Our own Ragnarok Online that was a moderate success in Asia and become king-of-the-hill for the longest time here managed to get clobbered when it tried to penetrate the UU. And this was even with decent reviews backing it up.

On the sci-fi end of things, EVE Online and Star Wars: Galaxies aren't even blips on the MMO radar here in Asia. And this is pretty sad as both games are incredibly rich and immersive experiences with mature online cultures that offer more than endless hacking through mobs of monsters.

It's like there's an invisible border between the Western gaming market and Asia. Not too many MMO games can successfully cross this border though there have been notable exceptions.

Blizzard's World of Warcraft is the unbeatable juggernaut for MMO's these days and it seems that around half of all its players are in China. We even have groups of dedicated players here despite having to get the game from outside and playing on foreign servers.

Common GroundWhile it would stand to reason that each country would have its own tastes in gaming, the Philippine gaming setting is a unique mix in the region. Prior to Level-Up's entry and launch of Ragnarok Online, our gaming culture was limited to playing at home and some cafes that had computers strong enough to handle decent games. We had some exposure to Japanese games but the preference was strongly Western due to language barriers.

Ragnarok Online changed all that as we Pinoys finally had access to Korean content that we could understand. Since then, the inevitable domino effect has led the Philippines to become a major market for Asian gaming and a testing ground for new international publishers trying to develop new gaming markets.

Our solid preference for English games makes us ideal for English localizations of various Chinese, Japanese and Korean games. Originally, these localizations are expensive as they're done for US and some Euroean markets with attendant translation costs. Our own Pinoy game translator costs less and the newly localized game can immediately make money in a market that's proven traditionally friendly to Asian MMO's.

As it stands, the Philippines sits squarely between 2 major philosophies of MMO gaming and takes the best from both. We love the level grinding in World of Warcraft and can still meet up with friends for a number of games for an hour or two of Ragnarok, RAN or whichever suits the barkada's fancy. We already enjoy gatekeeper status for a number of games attempting to cross the invisible border. If more gaming companies could see the potential of the Philippines as a testing ground, there would be fewer localization failures for MMO's. Now if only the Western game publishers would realize that.

Company Introduces In Cebu Market PCs Using Face Recognition Technology

CAN you use your face to log onto a computer system? Can a keyboard be anti-bacterial? Can you recover data in the event of a crash by pushing just one key in your computer? For Lenovo, the answer is yes to all three questions. These are some of the innovative features of the personal computers (PCs) that the leading vendor of PCs in the Asia-Pacific region is introducing to the Cebu market this week.

Paula Isabel de la Llana, Lenovo Philippines product manager, said yesterday that these new products are geared towards techsavvy and security conscious consumers.

She said the Lenovo Y300 notebook PC which has the face recognition technology feature. The computer takes a snapshot, extracts key features of the user's face and creates a digital map which is then used to log the user onto the system.

Vicky Agorilla, Lenovo Philippines country manager, said apart from our usual thrust on big business, "our thrust now is on the individual consumers." Agorilla said the Lenovo products are being used in call centers, shipping companies and even government agencies in the Philippines.

"We're launching the products here because we consider Cebu as one of our major markets in the Philippines," Agorilla said. The products launched yesterday are the Y300 and Y400 notebook PCs, the Lenovo Q and H desktop PC series.

"Recognizing that PCs are now an integral part of our lifestyle, this range of desktops and notebooks enable consumers to enhance productivity, entertainment and communication in one, easy-to-use package," Agorilla said. The Y400 has the "hidden touchpad" feature aside from the enhanced sound dedicated graphics card for entertainment uses.

The Lenovo H is for the home segment of the market. The desktop PC has an anti-bacterial keyboard and a one key recovery feature called the shuttle key that allows users to recover data if the computer crashes. Agorilla said that the keyboard is coated with silver ions which according to Japanese experts, inhibit the growth of bacteria.

Lenovo is the third global PC distributor and the no.1 in Asia-Pacific. The firm was formed with Lenovo Group's acquisition of the former IBM Personal Computing Division.

Cebu's First IT Security Summit Set Feb. 27-28

One of the major highlights of the first Cebu Information Technology Security Summit 2007 on February 27 to 28 is the formation of the first Cebu Knights of the Web-Visayas chapter.

The Knights of the Web of whose goal is to protect the worldwide web from cyber crimes, threats and terrorism, will be the first and only security organization in Asia recognized by EC Council, an International E-Commerce organization. To date, it has 250 active members in the country.

Global Knowledge Associates, Inc. together with the EC Council Malaysia, and Trend Micro will hold the event at SM City Cebu, the first of its kind held outside Manila.

After more than two weeks, many amongst us are still experiencing the effects of the earthquake that struck Taiwan and damaged submarine communication cables. The incident underscores many things. One, it shows the world's dependency on the Internet. Major corporations, banks and consumers had their daily business transactions and routines disrupted. Suddenly, people were not at ease in being unable to access their usual websites and cannot do business transactions at normal speeds.

More importantly, the incident underscores the need to provide backup facilities. The world now realizes that our daily way of life cannot and should not be dependent on a single pipeline that can be destroyed by unpredictable incidents such as earthquakes. Missio-critical transactions such as those of governemtns, banks or even BPO industry are compromised leading to service level shortfalls, revenue losses and inconveniences.

Within the IT industry of developed ecenomies such as the US, Europe and Japan, risk management and disaster recovery are in place. This is most evident in the US right after the 9/11 incident. For many US companies, for example, having several development sites is a must. Hence, many software companies maintain development and delivery centers in locations such as the US, Canada, India, the Philippines, China or even Vietnam. Doing so allows companies to provide and maintain the same service levels even as disasters such as terrorism, natural calamities, political tensions, or, perhaps, Internet disruptions may happen. Perhaps, it is most evident within the service industry where the demand is for non-stop 24/7, 365-days-a-year service.

The need for an effective back-up system does not stop with the Internet facility. Other areas within the IT realm also need similar redundant systems. This would include network facilities, power back-ups, manpower/resource back-ups, hardware server back-ups, and data back-ups. Hence, it has become imperative that much effort and attention has to be given to draw effective back-up systems. This is to ensure a continuous and hassle-free usage of these facilities and in the process ensure continuous service delivery.

Digital Art Contest Marks PODD Corp's Year 2

The Philippine Offshore Design and Development Corporation (PODD Corp.) celebrates its second year of operations in February, the Month of Art.

In line with the celebration, PODD Corp has also set up a digital art competition, and is calling out to all students to join.

Dubbed as "Pigs on Parade," it will be their first digital art contest with a registration fee of only P2 for each submission. Prizes at stake include cas for the top 3 winners with certificates and recognition of their digital masterpieces.

Students who have the knack for digital art have until jan. 27 to submit a maximum of two entries each. Registration will be from January 8 - 19, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at PODD Corp's office, Unit 703, 7th floor, Keppel Building, Cebu Business Park.

Yahoo! Project Connects OFWs To Their Families

INTERNET company Yahoo! has launched a new initiative that aims to connect 8 million overseas Filipino workers with their families, Southeast Asian executives told reporters yesterday.

This was a result of a Yahoo! global search study showing that about "33 percent of Filipinos believe that instant messaging applications" like Yahoo! Messenger, have helped "improve relationships between parents and children."

Recently, Yahoo! Southeast Asia also reported that Philippines became the third country in the world with the most contributions to the global Yahoo! digital time capsule project.

There are 14 to 15 million Filipino Internet users, with more than half of them using Yahoo! services at least once a month, Yahoo! Southeast Asia regional communications manager Jason Coates said in an interview.

The recent project, dubbed Pinoy Connect, is both an online and "offline" project dedicated to connect OFWs with their families, Coates said.

"This is not just a marketing program," Yahoo! Southeast Asia managing director Reza Behnam stressed. "We want to create a community. So this is our way of getting people to use this website as an introduction to the Internet."

The executives observed that the OFWs generally face little difficulty accessing the Internet. It is their families back home who are reluctant, Coates said.

Yahoo! Southeast Asia has partnered with public and private institutions, including the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), the Ayala Foundation's GILAS program, the Espicopal Commission for Migrants and Internet People of the Catholic Bishop's Conference of the Philippines, Level Up! Philippines, Netopia and Rex Navarette to jumpstart the "offline" awareness campaign for this initiative.

Yahoo! has also produced a booklet both in English and Filipino which teaches families how to start using the Internet applcations, the executive said. A copy of this booklet is available online or through OWWA offices.

Pinoy Connect is the first of its kind which is dedicated to migrant workers, Behnam said.

The executive also said this initiative intends to act as a "springboard" for next year's initiatives in the Philippines, which include the launch of localized services.

Recently, it has quietly introduced Yahoo! Videos for Filipinos and Yahoo! Answers tailor fit for local readers.

"We're doing this to eventually spur Internet user growth. With enough users, that will eventually attract advertisers, and in turn, we can spend more on content and development of services," Behnam added.

The Pinoy Connect website is currently bare, but will gradually include content from local partners, such as the OWWA.

In its statement, Yahoo! said the website will also include news and tools to help families communicate using Internet-based applications like instant messaging. "We're happy to explore more content sources," Behnam said.

CIE High School Business Trade Fair

It is time once again for the annual CIE High School Business Trade Fair and it is once again held at Ayala Center Cebu. This event is running for four years now. November 28 and 29, 2006 was the date set for the said event. The high school students visited Ayala from their school at President Magsaysay Road in Mabolo for the Trade Fair.

This event is done as a requirement to Mr. Arnold Sy and Mr. Jim Travis' Business Studies subject on all year levels (first to fourth year). Well, so much for introductions... Let's see those pics!

Four Core Cometh

Intel Corp., the world's largest computer chip maker, on Tuesday launched a family of chips with four computing engines inside a single microprocessor.

Intel rolled out four processors for servers under the Xeon 5300 branding, and another processor under the Core 2 Extreme series aimed at hardcore gamers, programmers and other people with heavy-duty computing needs.

The Core 2 Extreme chip is up to 80 percent faster than previous models, the Santa Clara, California-based company said. The Xeon 5300 chips use roughly the same power as previous generations while boosting performance as much as four times over single-core models.

Intel plans to release three morequad-core processors in the first quarter of 2007, including a more mainstream model for entertainment and multimedia uses under the name Core 2 Quad, and a Xeon processor designed for low-voltage uses and another for single-socket servers and workstations.

Intel, which is locked in a fierce battle for market share with smaller rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc., had originally promised the quad-core chips for mid-2007 but earlier this year announced it was ramping up production, beating Sunnyvale-based AMD to market by several months.

AMD, which has been stealing market share from Intel with chips that reviewers said were cheaper and faster to run, has said it expects to launch quad-core processors for its Opteron product line by mid-2007.

The battle has had an impact on Intel's financial health. The company announced a massive restructuring in September that called for a 10 percent reduction in staff - or 10,500 positions - to save $3 billion per year by 2008.

Intel executives hailed the quad-core launch as another key step toward reversing sinking profits and regaining lost market share. It also follows the launch this summer of its Core 2 Duo microprocessors, which deliver as much as 40 percent better performance while consuming as 40 percent fewer watts than previous models.

Sportshouse is setting up an interactive booth here in SM City Cebu and has given free basketball clinic, badminton clinic, taekwondo and high school cheerdance competition. Last Friday, November 17, 2006 high school teams practiced their cheerdance routine.

Nine teams competed in the High Schoo Cheerdance Elimination held yesterday, Saturday, November 18, 2006. And the teams are:

YouTube's US$1.65-B Payday

The BIG news to hit the tech world this week is the impending sale of YouTube (www.youtube.com) to Google for a whopping US$1.65 billion. That's a lot of money for a 65-person company that has yet to realize any profit. The main attraction though is the over 20 million monthly hits that the site has been able to generate in less than 12 months.

Founded by youngsters Chad Hurley and Steve Chen in 2005, YouTube is a video clip broadcasting site that allows users to share, view and upload their own video clips. Video clips are then classified and databased for easy access and viewing by site members in the future. The site is particularly popular with amateur music video and short films, becoming a venue for aspiring artists to show off their skills for free and for the entertainment industry to look for good talents.

Lately, TV production companies have also used the site to soft launch TV series aimed at the younger audience. Perhaps, the most eagerly awaited revenue maker of the site would be the ability of the site to show more moving ads, the likes that are similarly shown on TV. This would effectively transform YouTube into a strong ad revenue earner similar to TV stations without the costs involved in running a TV station, plus the fact that the Internet is a more targeted medium compared to TV.

Many analyst are speculating that this seems to be the Internet bubble years all over again. MySpace was bought by Fox for US$600 million, Sony bought video sharing site Grouper for US$25 million, and Viacom bought another video sharing site iFilm for US$250 million. Yahoo is reportedly eyeing to buy FaceBook, a social networking site aimed at high school students and alumni. The question now is whether or not Google is overpaying for YouTube. Perhaps, the best way to show that Google made a good buy in the long run is to integrate the video sharing capability of YouTube into Google's tested ability to sell ad-revenues. YouTube would also be able to ride on the current hosting infrastructure investments of Google.

But, why would Google or any company for that matter spend so much money to acquire an unprofitable site that a company like Google can technically develop on their own? Building a social networking site (SNS), for example, is not exactly rocket science. Our company built one for a Japanese client back in 2004, when SNS was not even a buzzword in the American IT industry. Two of the key buys here are the user-base and, more importantly the BRAND. Google is paying a hefty premium for the YouTube brand's being synonymous to video sharing. In fact, Google does have its own video sharing facility site, but the business people in Google may have thought that YouTube's lead in the video sharing market is insurmountable.

This brings me then to my argument all along - that to be successful in the IT industry requires more than just technical prowess. IT, like any other industry, is a business concern. All business rules apply - brand name, marketing plans, bedgets, financials, and organization strength. And this is perhaps where the challenge within out local IT industry is most pressing - developing companies with a good mix of technology and business expertise, developing businesspeople with interest and exposure to technology, and, developing technology people who are willing to tackle and address the demands of business.

Apple Junks Cathode-Ray Tubes

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA -- Apple Computer Inc. completely rid its product line of bulky cathode-ray tube monitors on Wednesday, becoming one of the first major PC makers to sell only flat-panel displays.

The Cupertino, California-based maker of Macintosh computers introduced an $899 iMac specifically for schools and students, replacing the eMac, which was the company's last remaining CRT-based model.

The move is part of an industrywide trend both in computers and televisions toward the use of liquid crystal display, or LCD, monitors, which are sleeker, less weighty and more power-efficient than their older CRT counterparts.

Apple was among the first computer companies to bet big on LCD in 2001 when it used the thinner technology to replace all of its CRT displays except for its candy-colored, egg shaped iMac line. By January 2002, Apple replaced those CRT-based iMacs with a revamped, space saving design featuring a swivel LCD display.

Apple's new, lower cost iMac for schools, students and teachers feature a 17-in (43-centimeter) flat-screen display and a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor. It's a substantial price discount from Apple's least expensive iMac Sold at $1,299.

That model has the same microprocessor and screen size as the education version but includes a larger hard drive and the ability to burn DVDs. The low cost iMac is sold only to qualified education customers - mainly schools and colleges as well as individuals who are teachers or college students.

Samsung Launches Blu-Ray Technology

Ridgefeild Park, New Jersey - Samsung Electronics America, Inc. announced this month that the industry's first Blu-ray disc player have been available in retailers in the US market starting yesterday, June 25.

The Samsung Blu-ray disc player (BD-P1000) has been eagerly awaited by consumers anticipating the opportunity to view High Definition discs on their existing HDTVs.

Leading movie studios are also supporting this technology with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) and LionsGate Pictures releasing Blu-ray content also this month.

Blu-ray is the next generation disc format which offers close to five times the resolution of conventional DVDs, making it the highest picture quality available in the market. The innovation marks the latest technology breakthrough brought to market by Samsung and further underscores the brand's commitment to offer consumers the ultimate home theater experience.

"The emergence of Blu-ray is an enormous boon for HDTV owners, video enthusiasts, and for those who actively seek the best picture and sound possible in their home theater," said Jim Sanduski, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Samsung's Audio and Video Products Group.

While current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM rely on red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser which better utilizes the space on the disc.

The Samsung BD-P1000 plays Blu-ray software titles at the highest resolution available via a native 1080p HDMI output for films digitally mastered at 1920 x 1080p. The BD-P1000 also up-converts conventional DVDs to 1080p through HDMI digital interface so the picture quality of a ny traditional DVD will look noticeably more detailed when used with the disc player. The BD-P1000 is backwards compatible and plays both standard DVDs and CDs in addition to supporting all DVD formats.

Samsung has included a 10-in-2 multi memory card interface that supports all the major formats including Compact Flash, Secure Digital, XD Piture Card, Memory Stick, (all TM) and others. By including a memory card interface into the Samsung BD-P1000, the native high definition resolution contained in two-megapixel and larger digital still pictures can be fully rendered on a high definition television via slide show functionality built into the player.

Connectivity includes HDMI, Component, S-video and composite outputs. Supported audio formats include: Dolby Digital & Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, MP3 and 192KHz LPCM. The BD-P1000 has been available in US stores starting yesterday.

The launch of the Samsung BD-P1000 coincides with a major influx of Blu-ray content. Seven of the eight major movie studios have already announced titles for Blu-ray, with the initial line-up of recent hits as well as classics, expected to grow more than 200 titles by year end.

Student Websites Win

High school students from two Cebu schools were recognized as winners in an international website design contest participated by schools in 52 countries.

Fourth year students from the University of the Philippines (UP) in Cebu won second place and got the gold award for "Calles de Cebu: Gateway to a nation's history" (http://www.streets.philippines-online.com)

This was one of three sites to win the gold award in the historical landmarks category of the International Schools CyberFair 2006 competition-exhibition held May 17, 2006 in San Diego, California, USA. (The first place winners were given the platinum award.)

The student's website describes the history and location of Cebu City streets classified by the origin of their names. Streets are named after "rajahs, conquistadors, priests, national heroes, local fighters, and great events". An interactive map has information about each road which can be accessed by clicking on it.

The UP High School Cebu team was composed of 63 students aged 15 to 17. UP teachers Renante P. Manlunas and Louella L. Manlunas acted as their advisers.

Another Cebu-based school, the Center for International Education won the silver award in the local music and art category for their website "Cebu: A Self-Portrait" (cyberfair.cie.edu). The site aimed to give Cebuano art global exposure.

The CyberFair is currently on its 11th year, and can be viewed on the web at www.globalschoolnet.org or www.gsh.org/GSH/cf.

UP High School shared the gold award in the historical landmarks category with San Andrea Senior School of Mgarr, Malta and River Valley High School of Singapore.

The first prize or platinum award went to the Bancroft School of Haoddonfield, New Jersey, USA, and the Lu Chiang Primary School of Taipei, Taiwan.

Board To Mandate Class Recitation Of "Cebuano Code Of Duties"

Aside from reciting the "Panunumpa sa Watawat" during the flag ceremony, students in Cebu will soon be required to recite in unison the "Code of Duties and Responsibilities for Cebuanos".

An ordinance which mandates all private and public schools to teach the code and to require students to "recite by heart" its 10 provisions was passed on first reading yesterday by the Provincial Board.

The provisions emphasize obedience to parents elders and government officials. It also tells students to value manual labor in all undertakings.

The ordinance authored by Provincial Board member Juan Bolo was reffered to the PB committee on laws headed by Antonio Almirante for review.

Bolo also drafted the code by himself.

According to Bolo, inherent in every Cebuano are the values "we uphold as a people, values that were handed down to us by our forefathers from generation to generation."

"These values of love for God and family, industry, modesty, simplicity, respect, and love for simple joys have helped identify and define us as especially unique and different from the people of other regions, yet, not losing our Filipino values as a whole," Bolo explained in his resolution.

He said the purpose of the ordinance is to re-introduce all the core values which have been neglected because of modern technology and other influences.

"There is an urgent need for us to re-introduce these values back into our system."

The Code of Duties and Responsibilities of Cebuanos is as follows:

"I am a Cebuano and as such I adhere to the following code of duties and responsibilities:

1. I acknowledge the presence of a loving and provident God.
2. I love my country for it is the land of my birth, the home of my people, the source of my happiness and well being.
3. I love and respect my parents, my teachers, officials, and elders. I will serve and gratefully serve them well.
4. I promise to keep my honor and integrity pure and clean.
5. I will be honest and truthful in all my thoughts and actions.
6. I will endeavor to live a simple, modest, and frugal life.
7. I will strive to be industrious and will not be ashamed to do manual labor.
8. I will develop and protect environment and natural resources.
9. I will contribute to the good of my community, promote social justice, and be law-abiding citizen.
10. I am proud of my heritage and my people."

Annual Trade Show Joins CBM Events

Leading Manila-based computer technology firms belonging to the Computer Manufacturers, Distributors and Dealers Association of the Philippines (COMDDAP) will showcase the latest information and communications technology (ICT) products, solutions, services and consumer electronics at COMDDAP Cebu 2006.

The biggest biennial ICT exhibit and selling show in the Visayas returns to the Queen City of the South with "I.T.'s Happening in COMDDAP Cebu 2006!" on June 22-24, 2006 at the SM Trade Hall, according to a statement from COMDDAP.

COMDDAP's three-day exhibit-sale is part of the celebration of Cebu Business Month and is also its contribution to a series of ICT-related events spearheaded by the Commission on Information and Communication (CICT) in observing the National ICT month of June.

"Cebu has come a long way since 1994 when COMDDAP first staged its expo in the city, which was our first road show outside Manila in our effort to make ICT products and business solutions more accessible to our people," COMDDAP president Juan Chua said.

According to Chua, Cebu has high information technology consciousness among individual consumers and companies, especially the small-to-medium scale businesses.

This factor will help boost the growth of the city's ICT infrastructure.

"COMDDAP Cebu will also continue to benefit the local ICT industry through increased networking, business opportunities and renewal of ties among distributors and resellers," said Jefferson Plaza, head of organizing committee.

CCCI Opens Web Awards To Students, Freelancers

As a way to encourage more web developers and designers, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) opens its 6th Cebu Web Awards to students and freelance professionals.

CCCI, in a statement, noted that Cebu has one of the richest talent pools in the country when it comes to web development and design.

"Exhibiting creative prowess with versatility, Cebu's web techies range from flash animators to online game programmers, macromedia experts to HTML encoders, and even independent weblog authors, commonly known as bloggers," CCCI noted.

According to Cebu Chamber, the 6th Web Awards, which is among the activities during the Cebu Business Month (CBM), would be an ideal venue for drawing out all professionals, freelancers and students in one setting and providing them with an opportunity to showcase their web designing chops.

The Cebu Web Award, which will be held from June 21 to 23 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, Lahug, Cebu City, has three categories - Best in Multi-Media, Best in Animation, and best in Website Design.

In the multi-media and animation categories, entries must be based on the CBM theme, "Invest Cebu," and must contain five-minute audio, video, animation and 3D elements.

The winner in the Best in Multi-Media category will receive P15,000 and a trophy while the winner in the Best in Animation will take home P10,000 and a trophy.

The website design category is subdivided into two sub-categories: Web Olympics (on-the-spot website design) and Best Website Design (existing design submitted as entry).

For the Web Olympics, contestants will be tasked to design a website based on a specific theme in a span of two days. There will be separate contests for college, high school and open sub-categories.

The Best Website Design has four separate categories - corporate/commercial website, LGU/e-Governance website, organizations/schools, and open category.

First to third prize winners in the Web Olympics will receive P10000, P5,000 and P3,000, respectively. First place winners in all Best Website categories will get P15,000 cash plus a trophy.

File-Sharing, Screensaver Programs Tagged 'Malicious'

A corporate-backed watchdog group that monitors software for deceptive and abusive practices on Wednesday named a widely used file-sharing program and three other applications as violators of its guidelines.

Kazaa, which its producer Sharman Networks claims is the most popular program for sharing files over the internet, "misleadingly advertises itself as spyware-free, does not completely remove all components during the uninstall process, interferes with computer use, and makes undisclosed modifications to other software," according to a report from the group StopBadware.org.

The group, started by researchers from Harvard and Oxford universities, also named a video download manager distributed by Movieland.com, a spyware removal program from SpyAxe.com and Waterfalls 3 by Screensaver.com.

"We chose four quite common applications to highlight, and we have found that in each instance the applications do things to violate the guidelines," said John Palfrey, a professor at harvard Law School. The report, the first to be released since StopBadware.org announced its formation in January, comes as critics say that spyware and other abusive software has emerged as a top scourge of Internet use.

More than 59 million people in the United States have computers with some form of software that hampers the machine's performance, transmits private user information, deceives the user about how the software behaves or violates other guidelines, according to StopBadware.org, citing research from Pew Internet & American Life Project.

Americans spend more than $1 billion (euro 820 million) a year fixing their computers and protecting their identities online, the group said, citing the same study. Kazaa and other programs distributed by Movieland.com, and Screensaver.com fail to disclose that they are bundled with additional software, according to Wednesday's report. They also modify other software already installed on the computer without warning, the group said.

Kazaa and two other programs are also hard to completely uninstall, StopBadware claimed. Officials from Sharman Networks and Freeze.com, the owner of Screensaver.com contested the report's findings. "We disagree with it," said Felicity Campbell, a spokeswoman for Sharman Networks. "We really don't have sinister desires to get into people's computers and stay there."

She said all Kazaa files are removed when a user uninstalls the program, contradicting a claim in the report. A glitch in Microsoft Corp.s' Windows operating system gives the appearance the programs are still installed, she said.

Richard Weber, president of Freeze.com, said his company's practices recently got a clean bill of health by a consultant from Chapell & Associates, which advises businesses on privacy and data collection policies. "StopBadware is trying to set a different boundary than what is common in the industry," Weber said.

Representatives from Movieland.com and SpyAxe.com didn't respond to e-mail and phone messages. StopBadware.org receives fundings from Google Inc., Sun Microsystems Inc. and Chinese computer maker Lenovo Group Ltd.

Integrating Your HR/Payroll Processes

In almost all business enterprises I have encountered, the first process to be automated is usually the payroll process. This is mainly because of payroll's repetitive processes, like time records, overtime/leave computations, printing of payslips, and generating the government reports.

Automating the payroll process is also a fairly simple task, even for first-time programmers. This applies for small organizations (less than 50 employees) that follow strightforward rules on payroll computations.

Complications happen though when organizations become larger. As organizations grow, processes become more complex. Different payroll rules and scenarios start to emerge for particular types of job. There will be issues like multiple work shifts or segregation of monthly, weekly, or daily employees with confidential pay slips.

More employees also mean more calls to the HR department seeking information about leave credits or loan status. This could disrupt work within the HR department.

It would then be best if employees can either do the inquiry on a self-service basis via their own workstations or a kiosk set up near their workplaces. What would even be better is for employees to be able to apply for leave, overtime or loans electronically.

Electronic and online applications eliminates the hassles of paper applications which are time consuming and are often lost within the approval process.

Integrated HR/Payroll systems also become essential when companies have multiple office locations. I have heard horror stories where payroll security is compromised as actual salaries are disbursed in remote offices. Integrating all payroll computation in one single location (usually in HQ) creates the most secure and best managed solution.

What can be done is to link the HR/Payroll system to the bank payment system. In this manner, companies can leverage the existing security and payment distribution system of the bank. Employees can then secure their salaries in any of the bank's ATMs.

As organizations grow larger, it enivetably becomes more complex. However, it does not mean that the organization should become less efficient. On the contrary, the organization's optimal size should provide it with the added strength to acquire the needed talent and tools to move the organization towards its goal in a fast and efficient manner.

A seminar on the latest data center trends in the information technology industry will be held in Cebu, according to a statement from the American Power Conversion (APC). Central Visayas Among RP's Major IT Markets

Central Visayas is among the regions identified as major markets for information technology products and services. Carolyn Andaya, IBM Philippines country manager for cross industry sector, said the company recently commissioned a marketing study. The study showed that six areas outside Metro manila accounts for 53 percent of IT spending.

Four of the six areas, including Central Visayas, are found in Southern Philippines. The three other areas are Western Visayas, Davao and Northern Mindanao, Andaya said. For this reason, she said, IBM Philippines is focusing on expanding its market reach to the areas concerned.

"Cebu is hub for the Visayas-Mindanao area. Part of our commitment is increased focus on these areas," Andaya pointed out. Abraham Thomas, vice president for global small medium business for IBM ASEAN/South ASia, noted that Cebu's economy is growing, as evidenced by a lot of construction activities here. Thomas said that IBM would like to take part in the economic growth by offering hardware and business solutions that would help businesses here become more efficient and productive.

He said that small and medium businesses (SMB), which numbers 500,000 worldwide, provide the IT industry an estimated US$380 billion market opportunity. For IBM, Thomas said, SMB is the largest single market opportunity, accounting for more than 20 percent of the company's total revenue in 2003 and 2004. In the Philippines, small and medium businesses account for US$551 million of market potential or 74 percent of total market opportunity, he added.

A report by IDC showed that 80 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) come from small and medium businesses, which in turn provide 70 percent of total jobs generated, Andaya said. IBM is also focusing on the growth areas such as banking, wholesale and retail sectors, and electronics sector, she said. Another area of growth is in IT sector, particularly the business process outsourcing (BPO) and the call centers, Andaya said.

According to Thomas, IBM's marketing focus is on two fronts, industry and geographical view. While the customer has choices of various products, he said, IBM offers value-for-money through its end-to-end products and the after sales service available to customers through the 100 service centers nationwide.

Cebu has a parts center that would allow quick replacement for damaged parts, Andaya said. Aside from this, she said, Cebu has several service engineers that would take care of the client's after-sales service requirements.

Why It's Difficult To Learn English

Let's face it - English is a crazy language.

There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?

If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend, that you comb through annals of history but not a single annal? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it? If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally
insane.

In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another? Have you noticed that we talk about certain things only when they are absent? Have you ever seen a horseful carriage or a strapful gown? Met a sung hero or experienced requited love? Have you ever run into someone who was combobulated, gruntled, ruly or peccable? And where are all those people who are spring chickens or who would ACTUALLY hurt a fly?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race (which, of course, isn't a race at all). That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it.
